Love Your Body Day is today!

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

Calling all bloggers! Are you ready to sound off on unrealistic beauty standards for girls? Or share healthy ways to feel good about yourself or cultivate self-esteem?

Now is your opportunity! Today is the Love Your Body Day blog carnival, featuring voices from across the internet and you're invited to add yours.

When you think about it, your body truly is one of the amazing wonders of the world — from your eyes helping you take in the world around you and your ears letting you enjoy your favourite tune to your liver safely processing any nasties you consume and your body healing itself from sickness and cuts, your body really does deserve a lot of respect and appreciation.

Each year the National Organisation for Women (NOW) Foundation celebrates Love Your Body Day to send a positive message to girls that beauty comes in all colours, shapes and sizes. This year's blog carnival will encourage girls to come together to celebrate a day of self-acceptance and promote positive body image by contributing their unique voices.

Here at DOLLY we're passionate about this important message, with dedicated re-touch free sections of the magazine and the use of real girl models in many of our features.

Body image continues to be a serious issue for the affect it has on girls' health and well-being, and the broader implications for how females are viewed in society. Very alarming research shows that 80 percent of females are dissatisfied with their appearance and it has been estimated that approximately 15 percent of girls in Australia will develop an eating disorder at some stage in their life.

This year will mark the first NOW Foundation Love Your Body Day blog carnival, in which writers and bloggers from a diverse array of perspectives will join in and speak out in favour of self-acceptance and against images of females that are harmful, dangerous and offensive.
