Name: Lauren Barker
Profile: Deputy Chief Sub-Editor
How did you score your job at DOLLY?
I was a grammar geek growing up and studied journalism at uni after high school. From there, I earned my stripes as a journo at a community newspaper, before working as a magazine sub-editor, food writer and property journalist. I’m a recent recruit to the DOLLY team – and they won’t be getting rid of me for a while!
What does your job at DOLLY involve?
The subbing team makes sure everything is perfect before it goes to print – that means every comma, every word and every picture. I also dabble in a bit of writing.
What do you love most about working at DOLLY?
It’s great being surrounded by so many passionate and creative people. ACP Magazines is a really inspiring working environment – and the Hyde Park view doesn’t hurt either! I love watching the mag come together each month, from the original story pitches to celeb and expert interviews, written articles, gorgeous layouts and the final end product. You’ll usually hear a few woops coming from the DOLLY office on print day.
What’s the hardest part?
Not being able to take the entire fashion department wardrobe home with me…
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to work at mags?
Write for as many different publications as possible, even if you can only nab unpaid assignments. Don’t be afraid to apply for jobs you think are beyond you – you may just surprise yourself.
