Going back to school after a carefree summer of fun chilling at the beach and hanging with mates can be a real shock to the system. Suddenly life's all about rules and homework rather than shopping and sleeping in. While some of you may be excited to see old friends and start the new year, others find it difficult to adjust.
Here's what you could be feeling:
• Stressed or worried
• Pressure to do well, from either your parents or yourself
• Sad because holidays have ended
• Concerned about starting a new school and making new friends
• Physically sick
While these are all common feelings, it's important to look after yourself and not ignore them. Here's how you can make going back to school a little easier:
Talk to someone
Remember you're not alone. Your friends will probably have the same back-to-school blues, so don't be afraid to talk about it. Remember a problem shared really is a problem halved.
Exercise
Jogging 'round the block may be the last thing on your mind when you're in a back-to-school slump, but exercising is great for the body and mind. It's your one-way ticket to positive vibes!
Set goals
Get motivated by thinking about what you want to achieve in the year. It doesn't matter if its school related (like being top of the class in English) or more personal (like getting your driver's license) working towards any goal will keep you focussed.
Get involved
By joining a club or a team, school becomes more fun. Not only will you make friends with people who have the same interests but it'll also give you some time out from study. Um, score!
Look forward to something
Hard times are always more bearable if you have something to look forward to. Organise a fun activity on the weekend or start planning a road trip with your mates.
Be the ice breaker
We know, we know, it's totally nerve-racking to look around your new class and not see any familiar faces. However, it's not so scary when you realise everyone else is probably in the same boat. Why not try and be the ice breaker? It will boost your confidence and you might even snag some new mates in the process!
Recharge your mind and body
Spent the holidays staying up late and sleeping in in the mornings? You need to get your sleeping pattern sorted, stat! The week before you head back to school, go to bed at a decent hour and try waking up early. A good night's sleep will do wonders for your mental strength and leave you cruising through the day on a positive attitude!
If you feel like your back-to-school blues are becoming overwhelming, you may find it helpful to talk to someone. Whether it's your parents, friends or a school counsellor, they're there to help.
