I’ve got a really big birthmark on my face!

Saturday, August 27, 2011
Dear DOLLY DR,
"I’ve got a really big birthmark on my face and I hate it. It’s the first thing that people see. It goes all the way up the side of my face, from my cheek to my hairline. Can I get rid of it or make it fade away?"
Fiona

Whether your birthmark is treatable or not depends on what sort of birthmark it is. Birthmarks, as the name suggests, are coloured marks on the skin that you’re born with. They usually fall into one of two categories: one type is a collection of blood vessels in the skin, while the other is pigmented skin, such as a mole.

The type of birthmark that’s due to blood vessels can sometimes be treated with laser surgery, whereas moles or pigmented skin may or may not be treatable with other types of surgery. Some birthmarks are just standalone marks while others might be related to other medical conditions.

It’s best to first have your birthmark diagnosed by your doctor or a skin specialist, then discuss what treatment is available.
